What Is fascism?
Fascism is basically like dictatorship, but instead of having one person rule over everything, fascism has a group or a class of people that rule. Most of the time it's the privileged class, usually the wealthy or the powerful, that rules everything. Any laws or free rights like working hour laws or wages that were set down before can be violated by this class, and the middle or working class cannot do anything about it. This works very well for the highest class, but usually life is bad for everyone else, therefore this ideology never tends to last very long before someone starts a revolution.
how does fascism link to animal farm?
1. The privileged class (wealthy or powerful) get to do whatever they want, they control the society.
2. Laws and basic rights can be changed and violated by the privileged class. |
a) The pigs in the farm were the powerful ones, they eventually got to do whatever they want and controlled the animals.
b) The seven commandments were changed and twisted, in the end completely wiped off, leaving the animals with no rights. |
Fascism is one of the main ideologies in Animal Farm, and the two links above are the strongest examples of how Animal Farm was turned into a fascist community. In Animal Farm the pigs immediately asserted authority in the farm by saying they were the brains that were running the place, but eventually they became more than leaders, they became the kings. They ruled over and ran the farm how they liked, for both Napoleon and Snowball, despite the fact that their intentions were different. Another example of fascism is that the seven commandments were twisted and eventually removed, taking advantage of and removing the working animal's rights and rules.
George orwell's effect
Orwell chose to represent fascism this way is to show how he disagreed with the ideology, he used the storyline to give off a message to the reader that fascism was not good. Anyone who reads the book can feel the negativity of how the pigs abused their power, even though this suited the pigs, the other animals were taken advantage of, their lives turned miserable, but they did not realize it.
